Do Women still Wear Slips?
As I was shopping for a chemise to wear to bed, I started to wonder about how nice some of the chemises I saw would look as a slip under a particular dress I owned. I then started to question whether women even wore traditional slips anymore?
Reading through various lingerie sites and bits and bites around the internet, I found that everyone said more or less what I was thinking. Older ladies wear slips under their dresses and younger girls wear their slips as their dresses now. Amusingly funny while succinctly accurate, this statement shows how fashion has progressed and morphed into a continual tête-à-tête between outerwear and innerwear.
But seriously, there are companies that still sell slips in the regular white, bone or black and full-slip or half-slip versions. And if women who buy these brands are a small minority, what are other women purchasing as replacements?
Some of the more popular modern alternatives to the old fashioned slip are chemises, shapewear and just plain nothing. Indeed, may women do not find it at all indiscreet to show their legs beneath a sheer dress eliminating the need for a slip. Chemises are so pretty that it hardly seems right to wear them only to bed. Why not enjoy them during the day, too?
Long shapewear is actually a perfect replacement for slips. It serves several purposes, one of which, to shape the body so no lines are seen through the clothing. Another is to keep the dress, skirt or pants from clinging to the body and rising up. Pants in particular were difficult to wear before shapewear because the pant-slips available did not always solve the clinging problem. Lastly, shapewear, under a dress or skirt in the hot weather, helps when one is not wearing stockings. It keeps the skin between the legs in the upper portion of the legs from rubbing together and causing severe chaffing.
Many of today’s shapewear comes in tall and short waist heights, long and short leg lengths and most can be turned up or pulled down to suit the outfit. Whatever your choice of slip, chemise or shapewear, there is certainly a wide range of selections to suit any age or fancy.
